Oil Spill
The oil spill was created when Iraqi soldiers took over a oil terminal and dumped several oil tankers into the sea. The total amount of oil that was dumped was about 11,000,000 barrels. The long term effect was very significant. It destroyed the fishing industry and it still has not fully recovered.
The Kuwaiti oil fires were caused by Iraqi forces setting fire to 700 oil wells. It took firefighters over a month to put out the firers because land mines had been put around the oil wells. The oil killed thousands of animals. This also created a sharp decrease in oil prices. Some of the oil wells are still not usable.
.
1.26 million Iraqi children also died in the war.
